I have a French colleague called Emanuelle who has come down to India for a two years long assignment. Likes most other foreigners in our country he also comes across new surprises every single day, he's able to make sense out of a few of them what ever he can't he attributes them to "Incredible India".
I came across one such incident today evening which I can make very little sense of so I have also attributed it to our good ol "Incredible India".
I had gone to the market to get some supplies, on my way back I saw a car coming from the opposite side, as soon as that car turned into the road I was in one of it's front tyres went into a open drain! So in a split second the car was left with only two tyres on the road. With the front tyre in the drain and the opposite rear tyre in air, the car was inclined at approximately 30 deg. The driver was able to come out but there was a lady sitting in the front seat who got stuck, the moment she tried to get move towards the door the car started shaking. Kind of in a mid air car situation we see in comedy movies.
In no time 3-4 workers at a construction site around the corner ran to the situation jumped into the drain and held the car to prevent it from falling further. They held 1/3rd of the car or their shoulder till the lady came out of the car. The driver who happened to be the lady's husband was frantically making calls on his mobile to get some help to get the car out of the drain. In the mean the workers along with a couple of other people around the car came up with a plan to get the car out. One guy got into the drivers seat of the car applied the reverse gear and put the car on full throttle. The car came out of the drain in a flash with the front tyre of the car rolling over the shoulders of the workers supporting the car.
The owner of the car was shell shocked that he was out of a dire situation in a flash. It took a couple of minutes for things to calm down and the crowd to clear off. Once the cars started a few of the people put a couple of big stones to block the open drain.
Once things had cleared completely I got a proper look at the open drain, the ditch was quie big but it was impossible to see it if it was dark.... oh ya I forgot the icing on the cake, the street lights around the area weren't working!
Driving away from that place I was wondering which part was more incredible, the fact that there are people who don't care enough about lives of others and leave these "open ditches" as custom made suicide points or the fact that there are people who can got to crazy extents to rescue unknown people out of them!
Well its irony (or is it paradox?) of the country and culture called India. well 1 is careless in his work and ignores the safety of people, at the same time the others go to the other extreme trying to help people in need of help. May be it is more pronounced in our culture than others,....
